A message from Fr Joseph
In recent years, I have had the joy of celebrating the sacrament of Baptism with many families who sincerely desire to hand on the gift of faith to their children. It is always a privilege for me to walk with you in these important moments of grace.
At times, however, some parents approach Baptism mainly as a step toward securing a place in a Catholic school. They may attend church briefly for the baptism, or until First Holy Communion, and then we may not see them again. This can be disheartening, because Baptism is far more than a requirement it is a sacred invitation to grow together in faith as a family. Using it only for practical purposes risks taking away from the beautiful meaning God intends.
Baptism is a profound commitment. When you present your child for Baptism, you are saying:
“Our faith matters deeply to us, and we want to share it with our child.”
This is a wonderful promise, and also a gentle challenge—to nurture your own faith so that your child may grow up surrounded by its light and love.
While Catholic schools play an important role in supporting families, the heart of Baptism lies in the home, in the faith lived daily by parents. The school’s mission is to accompany you, not replace your own commitment.
Beginning next year, Baptisms in our parish will take place every first Sunday at St John’s and every second Saturday at St Mary Magdalene’s.
Please feel welcome to contact the parish office on 01282 772200 to arrange a date for your child’s Baptism. We are here to support you every step of the way.
