Monday 4th May

Good morning Year 5 and welcome to the start of a new week. Hope you had a lovely weekend and are ready to learn this week.  You worked so hard last week and your work was of a super standard! Let’s continue that this week and always strive to achieve our very best even though we are learning at home. Remember I should be hearing from you and you need to ensure you are emailing me your work or posting on the blog. I am also checking your online activity on TTRS and any work I set on Education City. A lot of our lessons will have a History focus on VE Day this week as on Friday we will celebrate the 75th anniversary. I’m looking forward to seeing what you produce today.

English

LO - To read and respond to a text.

For English today, I would like you to read the newspaper article in ‘The Southern Herald.’ It is all about VE Day as I’m sure that you will know on Friday it is the 75th anniversary of the special day. Open up the word document below to get the article and read it carefully. There are some words you might not know the meaning of that you may need to look up. Then, I would like you to answer the questions below. You can answer them in your book and send me a picture, you can email your answers to me or you can post them on the blog.

  1. What is the headline of this article?
  2. How much does The Southern Herald cost?
  3. What is the picture of?
  4. ‘The King and Queen looked wonderful.’ Is this a fact or an opinion?
  5. How do you know that ‘the Mall’ is the name of a specific place in London?
  6. What does it mean to ‘bear the brunt’ of something such as the Nazis bombing campaign?
  7. Albert Sole says that the princesses ‘weren’t dressed in any finery’. What does he mean?
  8. What is the effect of the writer including the phrase ‘breathless from singing a hearty rendition of the national anthem’ when describing what Mrs. Judith Groves said?
  9. What does the word ‘one’ mean as it is used in the fifth paragraph?

Maths
LO – To divide with remainders

Your Maths work this week will focus on division with reminders. Today, your lesson is on a website called White Rose. Click the link below which will take you to home learning Year 5 Summer Term week 3. THE LESSON I WANT YOU TO LOOK AT IS LESSON 3 – DIVIDE WITH REMAINDERS. There is a video that you need to watch. Listen carefully and pretends it’s me in class! You can watch it more than once if you need to and rewind parts if you need to listen again. Then, click on ‘get the activity’ and complete this in your books. I have also put a link to this below. The answers are also on the page for you to mark them after. As always, let me know how you did by sending me an email or commenting on my blog post.

History

LO – To develop an understanding of VE Day.

This Friday is a Bank Holiday to celebrate 75 years since VE Day. VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marks the day towards the end of World War Two when fighting against Nazi Germany came to an end in Europe. This is a topic we haven’t done in class so I would like you to complete some research. Read the information on the PowerPoint below, watch the video and safely use to internet to conduct some research.

You can present your research in any way you wish for example a poster or a fact page either handwritten or using a computer, a PowerPoint or a leaflet.

I have also made another Kahoot all about VE Day. You might want to complete this after your research so you know a little more about the topic! Happy researching! Don’t forget to send me your work.
