St John the Baptist Roman Catholic Primary School Love One Another

Awards

Monday 15th June

Good morning Year 5. It’s Monday again! I hope you all had a lovely weekend. Dare I say it…we are now in week 10 of home learning! Please keep up the wonderful work. I really do love receiving your emails and your blog posts. You are producing some excellent work which I enjoy looking at and I also like it when you tell me about other things you have been doing or even just say hello!

It’s going to be a busy week and I have lots of activities planned for you. You are going to have to work hard in English and read instructions carefully. Here are today’s lessons:

Assembly

Click the link below to watch the assembly for today which is called ‘Feed our Souls.’

English
LO – To combine information about the life of a character and a setting to provide an introduction to a narrative.

This week’s English is all based on a video clip called The Lighthouse. You are going to be doing short, focused pieces of writing each day. Remember what I always expect in your writing: varied sentence openers which engage the reader; relative clauses; parenthesis with a range of punctuation; high level language choices; and neat handwriting. You were all brilliant at this when we were in school so I’m looking forward to seeing that you can still use these skills. Watch the video clip below as many times as you want. Pay particular attention to the setting and the main character!

Lighthouse

Open the document below and read my story opening. Here, I have set the scene and introduced the character. By giving an insight into the life of the lighthouse keeper, we are providing information into his background and it makes it a more exciting way to start a story.

Now I would like you to do 2 things:

  1. Split your page in half like the picture below shows. Find and copy any words/phrases/sentences that describe the lighthouse keeper or the setting. You could add your own in as well and think of your own ideas!
  2. Write your own opening paragraph, just like mine, which weaves information about the lighthouse keeper’s life into the setting. Remember, this is just the opening and it shouldn’t mention anything that happens in the video clip.

Please email these to me or post a picture of your work on the blog. You might want to type your opening paragraph on a word document as every day we will be writing a little bit more and adding to what you have done.

Maths
LO – To add decimals with the same number of decimal places.

Back to White Rose Maths for 2 lessons! For the next few days, we are focusing on adding decimals. Click on the link to take you to the White Rose website and look for Summer Term – Week 8 (w/c 15th June). Watch the video for Lesson 3. We are NOT doing lessons 1 and 2 so make sure you are on the right lesson by watching the video for LESSON 3.

Then complete the worksheet I have uploaded below. Have a go and do your best. Mark your work and send me your score through the blog or by email.

Science
LO – To understand that living things are made from one or more cells

Log on to Education City to find your Science lesson under classwork. The activities are not tablet friendly today so you need to be on a laptop. If it says you need flash player (as shown in the picture below) click ‘Get Adobe Flash Player’ and then ‘allow once’ which should come up.

Remember I am monitoring your score and activity on here so please ensure you do this task.
